Matrix UT & UT Scan — Automated & Phased-Array Ultrasonic Systems

Automated ultrasonic testing (AUT) is a core weld-inspection method. A motorized scanner carries phased-array (PAUT) and TOFD probes around a pipeline girth weld on a guide band, building an encoded, zone-by-zone record of the entire weld in minutes — without ionizing radiation, so adjacent crews can keep working around the weld.

The ultrasonic product line

• Matrix UT — described by Argus NDT as an "all-in-one phased array and data analysis system, designed, engineered and distributed by Argus NDT, Inc." argusndt.com. Argus lists conventional UT, TOFD and zonal phased-array (PA) methods, FMC/TFM imaging, and two-axis encoder inputs for pipe scanning.
• UT Scan / UTScan-M — UT Quality's proprietary automated ultrasonic system, designed and built in-house by UT Quality: zone-by-zone phased-array coverage of the girth weld, with a TOFD channel.

Matrix UT is designed and engineered by Argus NDT, Inc.; UT Scan is UT Quality's proprietary automated ultrasonic system. RAE Energy distributes both to the NDT companies that deploy them — RAE does not manufacture Matrix UT or UT Scan. (EdgeFlex is the separate radiographic / X-ray product — see EdgeFlex X-ray.)

Why NDT companies deploy it

• Production speed. A weld is scanned and assessed in minutes, keeping pace with mainline welding.
• Phased array plus TOFD. Zone-by-zone phased-array (PAUT) coverage, with time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) for detecting and sizing mid-wall flaws.
• Repeatable, encoded data. Every weld produces a digital record mapped to weld zones for consistent, auditable acceptance.
• No radiation exclusion zone. Ultrasonic inspection lets adjacent crews keep working — unlike radiography.
• Sizing for ECA. Supports defect sizing for engineering-critical-assessment (ECA) workflows where the procedure is qualified for it.
• Clean data for analysis. Encoded records are the structured input that AI-assisted weld review needs.
